The Pride of the Burgess Hill Lions Posted On 30 July 2021

Local resident Tony Harris has been awarded for his long-standing affiliation with the Burgess Hill Lions Club

The member, who is currently 80 years old, was given his award by town mayor Anne Eves, to mark his 30 years with the club. Mayor Eves spoke of Tony’s achievements, saying, ‘The Town Council wanted to acknowledge Tony’s great contribution as a Lion over 30 years, helping make the world a better place for others in many different ways’.

The Burgess Hill Lions Club is one of many Lions clubs up and down the country, and aims to ‘Empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding’. Founded in 1917, Lions Clubs International, which the Burgess Hill branch falls under, is the world’s largest service club organisation with 1.4 million members in approximately 46,000 clubs in 208 countries.

Tony wasn’t the only member of his family who gave up his time for the Lions Club though, as his wife, Val, also joined Tony soon after. Among the activities that Tony took part in, was a bike ride to Arnhem, as well as an aid run to Romania. But these are just a couple of key moments within the life of Tony Harris though, as a look at his Lions Club CV will also mention that he has been president of the club twice, as well as zone chairman and region chairman at different points. His aid trips have also included four Belarus trips.

After receiving the award, Tony, who is now going to reduce his involvement with the Lions, spoke of his thanks to the Lions. He said, ‘Burgess Hill District Lions has given me everything I wanted out of membership of the Lions’.

He concluded, ‘I have thoroughly enjoyed my 30 years involvement and would recommend it to anyone who wants to give something back to society and make lifelong friends’.
