Johnson wins race to be PM Posted On 24 July 2019

10 Downing Street

Today, Boris Johnson will officially take over from Theresa May as Prime Minister

Johnson had a clear win over his opponent, Jeremy Hunt, when it came to the final vote on who would follow in May’s footsteps and step inside No 10 Downing Street as Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party.

The win comes after much campaigning from both sides but with 92,153 votes to Jeremy Hunt’s 46,656, Johnson was the clear winner. He will take over as Prime Minister after May makes a short speech outside No 10 after her last PMQs at midday; she will then see the Queen to tender her resignation.

Following this, Johnson will then arrive at Buckingham Palace, where he will be invited to form a government. He will then make his first speech as Prime Minister in Downing Street, before entering No 10.

Responding to the appointment as the leader of the Conservative Party, Johnson wrote on Twitter: “Thank you all for the incredible honour you have done me. The time for campaigning is over and the time for work begins to unite our country and party, deliver Brexit and defeat Corbyn.

“I will work flat out to repay your confidence.”
