Embrace the Outdoors in Sussex Posted On 23 April 2021

There’s one more reason to want to get out of the house, as the National Garden Scheme (NGS) is encouraging all to pay a visit in the coming weeks and months

The National Garden Scheme allows visitors access to over 3,600 private gardens in England and Wales, and also raises money for nurses and health charities through food sales, as well as admission.

Over the course of their long history, which stretches back to the early 1900s, the organisation has donated £60m, including £2.88m in 2020. In the past year, charities which have received donations have included Parkinsons UK, as well as Marie Curie. But it’s also the mental health of the nation which the scheme looks to support. Celebrated on the week of May 7th 2021, is their dedicated Gardens and Health Week, which focuses on the benefits of gardens for people’s state of minds.

Macmillan Cancer Support are another recipient who share a unique partnership with the National Garden Scheme, with over £17m having been donated to the charity since 1984. Macmillan Cancer Care have said, ‘They (NGS) have helped fund care units in Bristol and Chesterfield. This includes 150 Macmillan nurses and vital professionals. Together, we inspire more people to visit gardens to enjoy the sense of wellbeing a beautiful outdoor space can bring’.

And what’s more, is that you can open your garden to the public! If you think that your outdoor sanctuary has something different to offer, then contact the National Garden Scheme to find out more.

In order to maximise the funds raised for charities, the National Garden Scheme website also offers great tips on how to get into gardening, as well as recipes for cakes to make and sell to your customers.

And many of these aforementioned gardens are located in West Sussex, with some able to serve refreshments outdoors, under current restrictions. And as a result of current rules, visits may need to be pre-booked. Areas which boast the greatest number of gardens in Sussex are in Chichester, Horsham, but to see all gardens which will be opening under the scheme, please visit https://ngs.org.uk
